In the summer of 1977, something extraordinary happened at Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio telescope. Astronomer Jerry R. Ehman was reviewing data when he noticed a 72-second burst of radio waves that was so unusual, he circled it and wrote “Wow!” in the margins. This powerful, narrowband signal—detected on August 15—came from the constellation Sagittarius and has since been dubbed the “Wow! Signal.”

What made the signal so compelling was its strength and clarity. Unlike typical cosmic noise or man-made interference, it appeared to be a real, structured signal from deep space. It was a strong narrowband radio signal at a frequency of 1420.456 MHz, close to the hydrogen line—the frequency naturally emitted by hydrogen atoms.
