United States: A tropical storm swirling in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa could soon grow into the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, according to federal weather experts.
The system, named Tropical Storm Erin, is currently located about 820 miles west of Cape Verde. Meteorologists say the storm is gaining strength as it moves over very warm ocean waters and could become a hurricane by late Thursday. The warm sea surface temperatures in its path, combined with low wind shear, are creating the perfect environment for rapid intensification.
Sadly, the weather system has already been linked to deadly impacts in Cape Verde. On the island of Sao Vicente, at least eight people were killed following intense rains and severe storms, according to Reuters. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has been closely monitoring Erin’s movement. Forecasts show that the storm is currently moving westward at a steady pace toward the Caribbean. As it travels, it is expected to strengthen further before slowing down and making a gradual turn toward the west-northwest. At present, the storm has maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, with tropical storm-force winds extending about 35 miles from its center.
While it is too early to determine the exact path and severity, the NHC has raised the chances of Erin impacting several locations, including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the northern Leeward Islands. There is also a possibility that parts of the U.S. East Coast, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Greater Antilles could experience its effects sometime next week. Meteorologists caution that forecasts may change quickly depending on atmospheric conditions, so residents in potentially affected areas should stay alert to updates.
This potential hurricane comes during what experts have warned will be an above-average Atlantic hurricane season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) projected earlier this year that between 13 and 19 named storms could form between June 1 and November 30.
