United States – Eric Hovde, a multimillionaire, and the Republican businessman from Wisconsin, is planning to make a run for U.S. Senate against the Democratic incumbent, Sen. Tammy Baldwin, next week.

Hovde campaign spokesperson Ben Voelkel said on Thursday that Hovde, 59, would be announcing his run next week after making careful preparations for more than a while, as reported by Associated Press.

Stakes High for Democrats in Senate Majority

Keeping Baldwin re-elected for a third term is the main factor for the Democrats to keep their majority in the Senate. The Democrats need to defend 23 senatorial seats in November, including two independents with a Democratic leaning. That is against the Republicans’ expectations of only 11 seats to keep in their column.

Hovde has been taking the necessary steps to prepare for his campaign for quite some time now, notably securing support from the National Republican Senatorial Committee and hiring people recently. He, moreover, appeared at Republican gatherings across the state, as reported by Associated Press.

Hovde had a previous run for U.S. Senate in 2012, where he was branded as a free-market conservative and lost against Gov. Tommy Thompson in the Republican primary. Thompson faced Baldwin and lost to her, who is now a three-time candidate.

Hovde’s Background and Recent Activities

In this race, Hovde campaigned on a repeal commonly known as Obamacare, the national health care law issued by former President Barack Obama. Additionally, Hovde expressed his opposition to abortion and his aspiration to overrule the Roe v. Wade law. The U.S. Supreme Court did it in 2022. This kick-started the Democratic campaign that year, which was pro-abortion rights. Baldwin vows to be vocal on this issue in this year’s senatorial election.

Hovde has mainly not been seen in the public for some time since then, although he did run TV ads in 2020 in which he targeted Democrat Tony Evers’ stay-at-home order in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hovde’s enterprises are Hovde Properties, a real estate company owned by his grandfather that was established in 1933, and 3 banks. He is the CEO of Sunwest Bank, which has billboards in the west and has appeared in their television commercials. He owns a $7 million estate in Laguna Beach, California, and his property in Madison, as reported by the Associated Press.

In 2011, he made a comeback to Madison after living in Washington, DC, for twenty-four years.

The Scott Mayer, a Franklin businessman, and former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke are other potential candidates for the Senate race. The other more high-profile Republicans, including U.S. Reps. Tom Tiffany and Mike Gallagher chose not to enter the race.

Baldwin’s Previous Success and Current Campaign Focus

The last time Baldwin faced reelection, he won by an overwhelming 11 points in a contest that served as a template for Democratic statewide campaigns in Wisconsin. In addition to being an industrious campaigner, she raised millions of dollars to back her successful bid and won widespread support from voters, including independents and those who do not favor the Democratic Party in Madison and Milwaukee.
