United States: On Tuesday afternoon, a Washington judge will evaluate legal arguments between major law firms and President Donald Trump regarding his executive orders that carry punitive measures, as reported by Reuters.
Law Firm Fights Back Over Retaliatory Orders
The law firm Susman Godfrey seeks a temporary restraining order from U.S. District Judge Loren Ali Khan during their constitutional rights litigation against the presidential directive.
The firm stated that the mandate threatens legal retaliation because of their representation of Dominion Voting Systems in defamation lawsuits against election-stolen claims targeting Donald Trump during the 2020 presidential election.
Through executive orders, Trump cut off legal access to public facilities and governmental officials before he attempted to terminate existing contracts held by Susman and four associated law firms.
The White House claims these firms weaponize legal systems based on their previous work for Trump’s opposition lawyers and the litigation against vote rights along with other issues he opposes.
The orders challenged the employment policies of the law firms that Trump considered discriminatory through diversity-focused measures.
Firms Face Hiring Restrictions
Nine law firms have received White House agreements with Paul Weiss, Skadden Arps, and Simpson Thacher, among them, to prevent potential economic harm as part of these agreements.
The signatory firms, together with additional entities, licensed hundreds of millions for free legal support for causes backing Trump’s agenda while agreeing to hire employees based on qualifications exclusively.
Other Orders Already Blocked
The courts have already prevented Trump’s orders against Perkins Coie and WilmerHale and Jenner & Block from standing because they believe these firms would prevail in their legal challenges to the administration, as reported by Reuters.
Susman Godfrey announced through its litigation representatives led by Donald Verrilli that the firm’s decision against the law “immediately, irreparably damages Susman Godfrey along with its partner group and their staff and clientele.” This action threatens both the rule of law framework as well as the independence maintained by the legal bar.
