United States: The U.S. Senate cleared the confirmation of Army Lieutenant General Christopher Donahue for promotion to a higher rank earlier on Monday after it was temporarily delayed by a Republican senator.
Promotion Clears After Temporary Delay
Senator Markwayne Mullin had applied a hold on Donahue for a four-star general and commander of the US Army in Europe.
Donald Trump and his fellow conservatives have criticized the current withdrawal of the U.S. military from Afghanistan last year and have vowed to attack those involved in the pullout. Responding to his re-election campaign, in August, Trump declared that he would discharge every worker romantically connected with the Afghanistan disaster, as reported by Reuters.
Republican Criticism of Afghanistan Withdrawal
On Monday, Donahue was confirmed by unanimous consent, and the Senate confirmed many military promotions in the bloc. His office has yet to give its comment on the request.
During the U.S. troops’ exit from Afghanistan up to August 2021, Donahue led the military’s 82nd Airborne Division.
Leadership Amid Controversy
Even though Donahue, who was holding his rifle next to him as he boarded the C-17 transport plane that left the last from Afghanistan, has become a symbol of a disorderly evacuation, he is regarded in the military as one of the most promising army leaders.
Unlike on House committees, one Senator can delay nominations even if 99 of the Senate wants to get the nominees approved immediately, as reported by Reuters.
