Among the deceased, three children—aged 2, 4, and 11—lost their lives, and three others sustained injuries in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. According to the sheriff’s office, a tree collapsed onto their vehicle on Sunday afternoon. The 2-year-old and 4-year-old were siblings, while the 11-year-old was their cousin. Initially, authorities indicated that two of the injured were the children’s parents, but further information remains undisclosed.
“The devastation at the scene was unimaginable,” remarked Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller in a statement to CNN.
Earlier that day, a semi-truck driver succumbed to fatal injuries in Valparaiso, Indiana, when violent winds toppled his vehicle. Reports indicated gusts reached speeds of 80 mph.
In another tragic incident, an Amish buggy carrying a family of four was overturned by severe winds in Middlebury, Indiana, approximately 70 miles east of Valparaiso. One fatality was reported, according to local dispatchers.
In Oklahoma’s Cherokee County, powerful gusts nearing 50 mph caused a tree to collapse onto a couple’s trailer near the Illinois River, resulting in the death of a man, as confirmed by KJRH.
The South faced the brunt of the storm early Monday, and the violent weather system remains poised to imperil tens of millions as it advances eastward throughout the day, according to reports by CNN.
Widespread Power Outages
PowerOutage.us reported that over 400,000 homes and businesses were without electricity by Monday morning. Michigan bore the majority of outages as fierce thunderstorms battered its southern regions, while ice accumulation in the north weighed down power lines. Louisiana and Mississippi also experienced surging outages.
Severe Weather Threatens the East Coast
Intense thunderstorms surged through the Southeast on Monday, intensifying as they tracked eastward. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) issued a Level 3 severe storm risk across regions from Mississippi to the Carolinas, encompassing cities like Mobile, Atlanta, and Raleigh.
These storms pose a significant risk of destructive wind gusts, large hail, and tornadoes. Additionally, the potential for flash flooding remains high as continuous rainfall saturates the ground.
Further north, storms are anticipated to strengthen by late afternoon, affecting cities from New Orleans to New York City. While damaging winds and hail are primary concerns in the Northeast, tornadoes cannot be ruled out.
The storms are projected to persist into the night before finally moving offshore into the Atlantic by Tuesday.
Tornadoes Ravage Multiple States
On Sunday, confirmed tornadoes wreaked havoc in seven states: Mississippi, Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, and Michigan.
McEwen, Tennessee, witnessed substantial destruction after a suspected tornado tore through the town, approximately 50 miles west of Nashville. The local sheriff reported that a home’s roof was completely torn off, with the residents trapped inside, though fortunately unharmed, as per CNN.
This March, an exceptional number of tornado reports have already been recorded, exceeding those from the same period last year. Areas like northeastern Arkansas, which previously endured catastrophic storms, faced yet another onslaught on Sunday.
Hailstones, some as large as baseballs, bombarded regions, with over 200 reports flooding the SPC. In Oklahoma City, images captured by KOCO showed jagged, golf-ball-sized hail blanketing the area.
Nighttime Dangers and Flood Emergencies
Navigating through the night heightened the peril as fallen trees and debris remained largely undetected. In Louisville, Kentucky, a driver collided with a downed tree on Sunday night but was promptly attended to by emergency responders.
Additionally, torrential rain caused hazardous flash flooding. Southern Mississippi faced a flash flood emergency on Sunday when more than 6 inches of rainfall overwhelmed the region. Flash flooding threats are anticipated to persist across the South on Monday.
Icy Conditions in Michigan
Northern Michigan contended with the icy side of the storm, with up to half an inch of ice accumulating on power lines and trees. Meanwhile, the southern region faced destructive thunderstorms.
Kalamazoo County officials reported over 130 instances of storm damage and warned that saturated soil could result in further tree collapses. Residents were urged to treat all downed wires as live and hazardous.
Two tornadoes were confirmed in southern Michigan on Sunday, contributing to the region’s mounting toll of destruction.
